The Education Review Office (ERO) reviews all schools and early childhood education services in New Zealand.  The subsequent report provides information for parents, schools, early childhood services and communities regarding the quality of education and learning outcomes for children and for specific groups of children including Maori students, and students with special needs.  ERO also reports on the quality of the school’s systems for sustaining and continuing improvements.

Hawera Intermediate School was reviewed in April 2017 where it was identified as having:

"...a high level of collegiality across the school, with all being committed and having a shared responsibility for all students".

" ...ongoing improvement in the numbers and percentages of all groups of students achieving at and above in relation to National Standards".

"Students are engaged and talk confidently about their tasks and activities. They support and treat each other respectfully".
